The Leeds Playlist is a fantastic project by @wandapops (see also @leedsplaylist and #leedsplaylist) inviting Leeds people to share their themed playlists. Month one had a set theme of “Colour”, but people were free to define their own theme if they preferred.
My favourite colour is rainbow, and here is the playlist on Spotify.
1. Ten Shades of Grey, Terrorvision
2. Black Hole Sun, Soundgarden
3. Burn Your Rainbow – Skinjobs
4. Little Red Bird, Lisa Maar Experiment
5. The Power Of Orange Knickers, Tori Amos
6. Big Yellow Taxi, Joni Mitchell
7. Green Mind, Dinosaur Jr
8. Behind Blue Eyes, Limp Bizkit
9. Indigo Girl, Watershed
10. Violet, Hole
My original intention was to choose a track for each colour of the rainbow, and then have three “rainbow” tracks. However, when I got to blue, and found this Limp Bizkit track I hadn’t heard for years, I started thinking about all those usually heavy or upbeat bands who release the odd subdued track like this. Somehow the contrast between their usual style and the melancholy of the softer track makes it much more poignant. I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers’ Under The Bridge and Indifference by Pearl Jam are excellent examples. It was this train of thought that reminded me of the Terrorvision track (which I’ve always loved), and then Soundgarden followed quite neatly on before we get a bit more upbeat again with the Skinjobs, a queercore band that I wish I’d heard more of. It was absolutely not hard to pick the tracks I wanted for my rainbow. Each one was a bit of a no-brainer really. Especially Green and Violet.
