Poetry Month 11 – “his arms are full of broken things”

Several years ago I found a book in one of those publishers’ clearing house type shops with stacks of books they are trying to shift for cheap. Because I loved the title, I bought it.

It was about the poet Charlotte Mew, who I hadn’t previously heard of. The book title is a lovely quote from her poem Madeleine in Church. The book was good actually, quite an engaging read, and I was inspired enough to buy Mew’s Collected Poems and Selected Prose. Which is mixed – as “collected” collections often are, of course. Generally a bit religious for me, though I do like A Farewell amongst others.

Then safe, safe are we? in the shelter of His everlasting wings?
I do not envy Him his victories. His arms are full of broken things.
