Poetry month 9 – three poems

There are three poems I want to share today, with a similar theme.

Firstly, Dylan Thomas’s Do not go gentle into that good night. It’s well known, and I love the earnest, almost angry refrain “rage, rage against the dying of the light.”

Secondly, WH Auden’s Stop All The Clocks (also known as Funeral Blues). I know it’s cheesy but I have to admit that however hard I try, I always hear this in a Scottish accent. I can’t think why. The line “I thought that love would last forever: I was wrong” is such a despairing point in the middle of what is actually a fairly ridiculous dramatic set of statements. The thing about grief, though, is that the ridiculous is completely realistic.

The last one is an echo of the second line of the Dylan Thomas poem.  Jenny Joseph’s Warning.
